- India's nuclear energy sector has achieved a significant milestone. On May 7, 2026, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) granted permission for the resumption of operations at Unit-2 of the Tarapur Atomic Power Station in Maharashtra.
- This approval was granted following the completion of extensive repairs, technical enhancements, and safety upgrades at the plant.
- All these works were executed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
- Located near the Boisar area in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, the Tarapur Atomic Power Station is counted among the country's oldest nuclear power facilities.
- Its Unit-1 and Unit-2 are India's first Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs), which commenced commercial power generation in 1969.
- Prior to this, in December 2025, Unit-1 of the Tarapur station had also received permission to resume operations.
- Currently, this unit is operating successfully at its rated generation capacity of 160 megawatts.
- Now, with the approval granted for Unit-2, the country's nuclear power generation capacity is expected to receive a further boost.
