- In a significant development for wildlife conservation in South Asia, Bangladesh became the 27th member of the International Big Cat Alliance on June 24, 2026.
- This move by Bangladesh will further strengthen cooperation between India and Bangladesh regarding the conservation of tigers and other wildlife, particularly in the Sundarbans region.
- The International Big Cat Alliance is a treaty-based intergovernmental international organization headquartered in New Delhi.
- The idea for its establishment was proposed by Narendra Modi in April 2023, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of 'Project Tiger'.
- It subsequently attained the formal status of an intergovernmental organization and an independent legal entity on January 23, 2025.
- The organization's primary objective is to foster cooperation among member nations for the conservation of the world's seven major big cat species: tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma.
- It promotes initiatives such as research, technical assistance, capacity building, financial support, and knowledge exchange.
