- June 1, 2026, marks a day of significant achievement for Indian Railways, as the South Coast Railway (SCOR) Zone will officially commence operations on this date.
- With its headquarters established in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, it will become the 18th zone of Indian Railways.
- The formation of this new zone has been undertaken in accordance with the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, with the objective of enhancing the effectiveness of railway administration and operations within the state.
- The Central Government formally approved the creation of the South Coast Railway Zone through a Gazette notification issued on May 4, 2026.
- Prior to this, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had announced its operational commencement date on April 28, 2026. The establishment of this new zone is expected to accelerate the management, coordination, and developmental activities related to railway services.
- Four railway divisions have been incorporated under this zone.
- Specifically, the Vijayawada, Guntur, and Guntakal divisions—previously part of the South Central Railway—have been transferred to this new zone, while the Visakhapatnam division has been restructured and integrated as a constituent part.
- It is anticipated that this reorganization will make a significant contribution toward the development of regional railway infrastructure and the enhancement of administrative efficiency.
