17 new tehsils approved in Ladakh

  • In a significant move to strengthen the administrative setup in Ladakh, the Union Territory's Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, approved the creation of 17 new tehsils on July 12, 2026.
  • With this decision, the total number of tehsils in Ladakh has risen from 15 to 32.
  • In addition to the creation of new tehsils, the reorganization of existing tehsils and revenue villages has also been approved.
  • The objective of this restructuring is to make administrative boundaries clearer, more streamlined, and focused on public convenience, thereby ensuring that government services are delivered to the people more effectively.
  • Following the reorganization, the distribution of tehsils will be as follows: Leh (5), Kargil (7), Changthang (4), Nubra (6), Zanskar (4), Sham (5), and Dras (1).
  • This new administrative structure has been formulated based on the recommendations of a Union Territory-level committee.
  • Under this arrangement, each revenue village will fall under a single tehsil, and each tehsil under a single district, thereby eliminating any possibility of confusion or overlap regarding administrative jurisdiction.
