First GI product gallery opened in Uttarakhand

• On July 13, 2026, the Uttarakhand government inaugurated the state's first Geographical Indication (GI) product gallery at the Uttarakhand Forest Training Academy in Haldwani.

• The gallery showcases more than 30 products from the state that have received the GI tag. These include traditional agricultural products, handicrafts, handloom items, and various unique products linked to the state's cultural heritage.

• The primary objective of this initiative is to gain national and global recognition for Uttarakhand's unique and traditional products, enhance their brand value, and provide better marketing opportunities for local farmers, weavers, artisans, and craftspeople.

• This initiative will not only help preserve the state's cultural heritage but also boost the local economy and employment.

• A Geographical Indication (GI) is a distinctive sign awarded to products whose quality, reputation, or specific characteristics are linked to a particular geographical region.

• This tag certifies the authenticity and regional identity of the product.

• In India, the registration and protection of GI tags are governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
