- In the Global Livability Index 2026 released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on July 8, 2026, India's capital, New Delhi, ranked 120th out of 173 cities.
- The city achieved an overall score of 48.1. This annual index assesses the quality of life in major global cities and ranks them based on parameters such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, culture and environment, and stability.
- This year, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, was named the world's most livable city for the second consecutive year.
- New Delhi performed best in the education category, securing a score of 66.7. The city received 58.9 points for infrastructure, 41.7 points for healthcare services, and 35.4 points in the culture and environment category. Based on the overall evaluation of these parameters, New Delhi was placed 120th with a total score of 48.1.
- Among Indian cities, New Delhi held the highest rank, while Mumbai ranked 121st, Chennai 123rd, and Bengaluru 127th.
- According to the report, Indian cities performed relatively well in terms of education and economic activities; however, their global rankings were impacted by challenges such as air pollution, increasing traffic, housing issues, and mounting pressure on urban infrastructure.
