If you’re an engineering graduate dreaming of donning the olive greens, here’s some good news. The Indian Army has released the official notification for the Short Service Commission (SSC) Technical 68th Course for Men, April 2027 batch. Applications open on 9 July 2026, and this is one of the most sought-after routes for engineers to join the Army as commissioned officers — no written exam, selection is purely through the SSB interview.
Here’s everything you need to know before you apply.

Indian Army SSC Technical 68th Course (Men) Overview
The Indian Army conducts the SSC Technical entry twice a year for engineering graduates who want to serve as officers in technical roles. This notification is for the 68th Course, with training commencing in April 2027. A total of 350 vacancies (tentative) are on offer for men across various engineering streams.

Who Can Apply — Eligibility
To be eligible, you need a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in a trade that’s recognized under this recruitment (more on the specific streams below).
Age Limit (as on 1 April 2027):
- Minimum age: 20 years
- Maximum age: 27 years (35 years for widows, under the applicable relaxation)
- In terms of birth dates, you should be born between 1 April 2000 and 31 March 2007
If you fall under any reserved category or special relaxation, it’s worth checking the detailed notification once it’s out, since relaxations aren’t always straightforward.
Vacancy Breakdown — 350 Posts Across Engineering Streams
The vacancies are spread across core engineering disciplines. Here’s how the 350 posts break down:
| Engineering Stream | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| Mechanical (incl. Production, Automobile, Aeronautical, Aerospace, etc.) | 101 |
| Civil (incl. Building Construction Technology, Architecture) | 75 |
| Electronics (incl. Telecom, Communication, Satellite, Fibre Optics, etc.) | 64 |
| Computer Science (incl. IT, Computer Technology) | 60 |
| Electrical (incl. Electronics & Instrumentation) | 33 |
| Miscellaneous Streams (Chemical, Biomedical, Textile, Mining, Metallurgical, Food Tech, and more) | 17 |
| Total | 350 |
The good part is that the eligible degree list is fairly broad within each stream. For instance, if you’ve studied Mechatronics, Automobile Engineering, or even Workshop Technology, you’d fall under the Mechanical stream. Similarly, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Information Science & Engineering graduates are all eligible under the Computer Science stream. It’s worth cross-checking your exact degree title against the official notification once released, just to be sure your specialization is covered.
Selection Process
Unlike many other government exams, there’s no written test for SSC Technical entry. Selection is based entirely on the SSB (Services Selection Board) Interview, which typically spans five days and evaluates officer-like qualities through psychological tests, group tasks, and personal interviews. Candidates shortlisted after SSB will then undergo a medical examination before final merit is drawn up.
Pay Scale
Pay will be as per the applicable Army pay rules for Short Service Commission officers, along with the usual perks and allowances that come with a defence commission.
