Initiative to gain global recognition for Lakadong turmeric

  • The Central and Meghalaya governments have launched ‘Mission Golden Spice’ with the aim of gaining global recognition for Meghalaya’s renowned Lakadong turmeric by integrating its cultivation, processing, branding, and export.
  • Launched in New Delhi on July 21, 2026, this five-year project will run from 2026 to 2030, with an allocated budget of ₹175.45 crore.
  • Lakadong turmeric is globally renowned for its high curcumin content (7–12%), whereas ordinary turmeric typically contains only about 2–4%.
  • Due to its high curcumin content, it is valued for its medicinal properties and superior quality, and commands high demand in premium markets.
  • Lakadong turmeric also holds the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which certifies its unique geographical origin, authenticity, and distinct market identity.
  • This initiative marks a significant step towards boosting farmers' income, encouraging value addition, and strengthening the global competitiveness of Indian spices.
