GSI gets its first woman head

• Varsha Ashok Aglave assumed office as the 54th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) on July 31, 2026.

• With this, she has become the first woman to lead this prestigious, 176-year-old scientific institution.

• Her appointment comes at a time when special emphasis is being placed on the exploration of critical and strategic minerals and the scientific assessment of resources in the country.

• The Geological Survey of India (GSI) was established in 1851 and is India's premier geological institution.

• Operating under the Ministry of Mines, this organization is a key hub for mineral resource exploration, geological mapping, geological surveys, and research related to earth sciences. It is also counted among the country's oldest scientific institutions.
