World Elephant Day

• World Elephant Day was observed on August 12, 2026.

• On this occasion, India reiterated its commitment to elephant conservation.

• India is home to approximately 60% of the world's wild Asian elephants. The country has 33 elephant reserves and around 150 scientifically identified elephant corridors.

• The government focuses on protecting elephant habitats and corridors, monitoring through modern technology, and mitigating human-elephant conflict.

• 'Project Elephant' was launched in India in 1992 for elephant conservation.

• World Elephant Day was inaugurated on August 12, 2012, with the aim of raising global awareness about the conservation of Asian and African elephants, the protection of their natural habitats, and the threats they face.
