26th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)

• The 26th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, on August 31 and September 1, 2026.

• Held to mark the 25th anniversary of the SCO's establishment, the summit was attended by top leaders from member nations as well as representatives from observer and dialogue partner countries.

• During the meeting, discussions focused on several key issues, including regional security, connectivity, the organization's institutional expansion, and the strengthening of cooperation.

• The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was founded in 2001, building upon the 'Shanghai Five' process. Over time, it has evolved into an influential Eurasian intergovernmental forum.

• Currently, the SCO comprises 10 member states: India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus.

• The Bishkek summit highlighted the growing significance of the SCO amidst changing global and regional dynamics.

• In addition to addressing security challenges, the summit placed special emphasis on enhancing trade, economic cooperation, and regional connectivity.

• Meanwhile, India underscored the need for strong and coordinated action against terrorism and advocated for collective efforts to ensure regional peace and stability.
