Canada declares national emergency for the first time

  • Trudeau's move is to give the federal government additional powers to handle truck drivers' blockades and protests against the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
  • The Emergency Act came into force in Canada for the first time in 50 years.
  • The sudden imposition of the Emergency Act gives the police more powers to restore order in places where public gatherings constitute illegal and dangerous activities such as blockades.
  • The Canadian government is preparing to end the mandatory PCR test for people who have completed vaccinations. After the implementation of this decision, no Canadian citizen will need a PCR test to travel abroad.
