- The World Health Organization has released the World Malaria Report 2022.
- According to the report, in 2021, there were an estimated 247 million malaria cases in 84 countries.
- The number of malaria cases is projected to increase from 245 million in 2020 to 247 million in 2021.
- Malaria cases per 1000 risk population have decreased from 82 in 2000 to 57 in 2019, increasing to 59 in 2020.
- Twenty-nine countries are responsible for 96% of malaria cases worldwide.
- Nigeria (27%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12%), Uganda (5%) and Mozambique (4%) account for 50% of malaria cases globally.
- In the South-East Asia region, malaria cases are projected to decline from 23 million in 2000 to about 5 million in 2021.
- India accounts for 79% of the total cases in the South-East Asia region. Sri Lanka was declared malaria-free in 2016.
