Indian Wildlife Conservation Society Report, 2023


  • According to data compiled by the Indian Wildlife Conservation Society, 204 tigers died in India in 2023.
  • The highest number of tiger deaths were recorded in Maharashtra (52). After this is Madhya Pradesh (45). Deaths of 26 tigers were recorded in Uttarakhand.
  • Tamil Nadu and Kerala recorded 15 deaths each. Karnataka recorded 13 deaths.
  • Karnataka ranks second in terms of number of tigers in India.
  • 7 deaths were recorded in Uttar Pradesh. 3 deaths each were recorded in Bihar and Chhattisgarh.
  • The cause of death of 79 tigers in India is 'natural and other causes'.
  • 55 tigers died due to poaching while 46 tigers died due to infighting. Fourteen tigers died during rescue/treatment.
