Congo's first female prime minister

  • Congo has appointed Judith Suminwa Tuluka as its first female Prime Minister.
  • He has been appointed by Félix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • President Tshisekedi fulfilled an election promise. It is a step towards forming a new government after Tshisekedi was re-elected late last year.
  • Tuluka will take office at a time when violence is increasing in the country's mineral-rich eastern part, bordering Rwanda.
  • The United Nations estimates that more than 7 million people have been displaced by the violence.
  • More than 120 armed groups have long controlled eastern Congo, located not far from the country's capital, Kinshasa.
