Footballer Sunil Chhetri announces retirement from international football

• Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri will retire from international football after the FIFA World Cup qualification match against Kuwait on June 1.

• In a career spanning two decades, Chhetri has been a prominent figure in Indian football, playing 145 matches for the national team and scoring an impressive 94 goals.

• He has played a key role in India's victories in the SAFF Championship (2011, 2015, 2021) and Nehru Cup (2007, 2009, 2012).

• Most notably, he helped India win the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, allowing them to qualify for their first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years.

• Chhetri started his professional career with Mohun Bagan in 2002.
