'Gaj Mitra' scheme

The Assam government launched the 'Gaj Mitra' scheme on July 11, 2025. The main objective of this scheme is to control the increasing human-elephant conflict in the state.

Key Points and Objectives of the 'Gaj Mitra' Scheme

  • Reducing Human-Elephant Conflict: Human-elephant conflict is a serious problem in Assam, often leading to loss of life and property. The 'Gaj Mitra' scheme aims to reduce this conflict.

  • Community-Based Quick Response Teams: Under this initiative, community-based quick response teams will be formed in 80 villages affected by human-elephant conflict. Each team will consist of eight local members who will receive special training.

  • Safe Movement of Elephants: These teams will work to ensure the safe movement of elephants and protect local livelihoods (especially during the paddy cultivation season).

  • Awareness Programs: The scheme also emphasizes raising awareness among local people so they understand elephant behavior and coexist safely with them.

  • Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cameras: Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras will be used to monitor elephant movements and provide early warnings of potential attacks.

  • Affected Districts: This scheme is currently being implemented in 8 districts where human-elephant conflict is most prevalent, such as Goalpara, Udalguri, Nagaon, Baksa, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Biswanath.

  • Protection of Life and Livelihood: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that this is an active, trained, and community-based support system that will help people living in conflict areas and protect both lives and livelihoods.
