- The Maharashtra government has decided to celebrate 7 August every year as “Sustainable Agriculture Day” to commemorate the birth centenary of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan.
- The announcement was made by Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate as a tribute to the father of India's Green Revolution.
- Dr. Swaminathan's contribution in increasing the productivity of wheat and rice was important in achieving India's food security.
- In recognition of his contribution, the Government of India awarded him the Bharat Ratna in 2024.
- The United Nations has also recognized him as the Father of Economic Environment.
