Discovery of an Underground River Channel Beneath the Prayagraj–Kanpur Region

  • Scientists at the Hyderabad-based CSIR–National Geophysical Research Institute have identified an ancient underground river channel beneath the Prayagraj–Kanpur region of Uttar Pradesh.
  • This buried channel is referred to as a "palaeo-channel," which denotes an ancient river course preserved beneath the current land surface.
  • A palaeo-channel is an abandoned or buried river stream that may be filled with sand, silt, or groundwater.
  • In this instance, the channel is situated approximately 10 to 15 meters below the land surface and extends for about 200 kilometers from Prayagraj to Kanpur.
