Kilai becomes Tamil Nadu's first climate-resilient village

  • Kilai village in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district has become the state's first fully functional climate-resilient village.
  • This achievement was officially announced on July 22, 2026. The initiative was developed under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, which aims to make rural areas more capable and sustainable in facing the impacts of climate change.
  • This model integrates ecosystem conservation and restoration, the use of renewable energy, sustainable management of natural resources, and active community participation.
  • The state government launched the Climate Resilient Villages Programme in 2022-23 with the primary goal of making coastal areas more resilient to climate challenges such as cyclones, sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, coastal erosion, and biodiversity loss.
  • Additionally, special emphasis has been placed on securing and ensuring the sustainability of the livelihoods of fishing communities.
  • The program is being implemented in 11 selected villages across 11 districts of Tamil Nadu; Kilai is the first village to successfully implement all the key standards and components of the scheme, thereby establishing itself as a model for the state.
