- The then Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme established World Population Day in 1989.
- The day was established as a result of public interest in the Five Billion Population Day, which was celebrated on 11 July 1987.
- The day was first celebrated on 11 July 1990. In December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to continue celebrating World Population Day.
